Intel will do away with yet another legacy technology – the parallel ATA or IDE technology, which is used to connect mass storage to computers. Its upcoming ICH8 south bridge chip will not have PATA support. Instead the number of USB 2.0 ports that it will support will rise to ten. The new south bridge chip will also feature USB port disabling, and will support up to six Serial ATA ports and six PCI Express x1 lanes. The AC ’97 sound system will also be abandoned.
